Old Calcutta kept its garden houses on the edge of town — a walled plot, a wide verandah, a pond somewhere at the back, and enough shade that the city stopped mattering for a weekend.
Joka still has that kind of room. The Baggan Bari is being built in that spirit rather than as a copy of it: a handful of rooms to stay in, a garden big enough to marry in, and a kitchen worth the drive on its own.
Each part can be booked on its own. Take the whole property and they run together — the rooms fill with your family, the lawn takes the ceremony, the kitchen feeds all of it.
A few rooms and suites, each with its own bit of verandah, and nothing on the schedule. Built for long weekends, family stays, and guests who would rather have the whole house.
Lawn and courtyard for the ceremony, covered space for the feast, and rooms on site for the family who travel in. Small enough to stay personal, big enough to matter.
A Bengali kitchen first, with room for the rest. Long lunches, river fish, and a short menu that moves with whatever the market gave us that morning.
Joka sits at the south-western edge of Kolkata, off Diamond Harbour Road and at the far end of the Metro's Joka line. It is the point where the city gives up and the trees take over — close enough to come out for lunch, far enough that the horns stop.
